Freedom of Speech?

This article is from the Tennessean, a Nashville based major newspaper.

Supt. says school paper will be printed without debated story

OAK RIDGE, Tenn. (AP) -- A censored version of the Oak Ridge High School newspaper will be printed, schools superintendent Tom Bailey said Tuesday.

Administrators at Oak Ridge High School went into teachers' classrooms, desks and mailboxes a week ago to retrieve all 1,800 copies of the student-produced newspaper. An article about birth control and another on student tattoos and body piercings were cited by administrators as the reason for the seizures.

Bailey told The Oak Ridger newspaper on Tuesday the edition will be reprinted without the birth control story and with an edited tattoo story.

Calls by The Associated Press to Bailey Tuesday morning seeking additional comment were not immediately returned.

The seizure of the newspapers had sparked debate inside and outside the school. Monday night's school board meeting drew a large crowded that included students who wore tape with the word "censored" across their mouths and shirts with protest messages that read "Ignorance isn't bliss."

Brittany Thomas, student editor of The Oak Leaf, told the Knoxville News Sentinel Monday that students are talking with the American Civil Liberties Union and the Student Press Law Center about having a lawyer represent them.

"We're still pursuing this," Brittany said. "They (school officials) wronged us."

"It's not a small thing for a government to confiscate a newspaper," said David Stuart, a local lawyer who met with some students Monday night.

The Oak Leaf's birth control article listed success rates for different methods and said contraceptives were available from doctors and the local health department. Bailey said the article needed to be edited so it would be acceptable for the entire school.

At the school board meeting, parent Jackie Moreno said parents should give their children information about sex.

"It's my responsibility to educate my children about sex and birth control," Moreno said.

The story's author, Krystal Meyers, defended her work.

"A lot of kids don't know that is their right," to obtain birth control without parental permission, Meyers said. "That was me letting them know what their rights are."

"That article talks about subverting parental authority," parent Joseph Oswald said.

In talks between administrators and students, Meyers said she would rather not have her story published, if suggested revisions were required.

Thomas said principal Becky Ervin also wants the tattoo story eliminated, because four of the students pictured are underage.

"The fact is, she (Ervin) changed what she was complaining about," Thomas said before Monday's school board meeting.

Bailey had said Friday the objection to the story was the edition also contained a photo of an unidentified student's tattoo, and the student had not told her parents about the tattoo.

I put the one paragraph of the article in bold to highlight it, it was not the Tennessean's selection.

I just wanted to provide another example of "America's freedom of speech unless you offend someone" Comments are welcomed!

I didn't take this picture, but it does an awesome job of capturing the awe-inspring beauty of PWP. Hopefully, when I go home again in Decemeber I will remember to take a camera out there and get some fabulous pictures! Posted by Picasa

Reflecting upon a visit

I tell you, its good/bad to be back. I had a fabulous time with my Beth at home, especially our date on Friday night! It was our first in a while, hopefully there will be many more in the future! Home was wonderful. It was warm and toasty. I ran shirtless! Of course the trails were beautiful. Very little parallels or exceeds running in a foot of leaves. The crunching silence cannot be topped for peacefullness. Sometimes I fail to see the beauty of my running domain but as I stood and stretched on top of the hill overlooking Steeplechase I couldnt help but think about how awe-inpsiring the view is from there. Reflecting upon my time spent there I am going to write a few words or respect and awe as a thanks to the beauty I witnessed.

Gray branches reach across the sky, struggling to fight the onset of winter without the wonderful colors of summer or fall. For miles, this is all my eyes can see, rising and sinking with the flow of the Tennessee Hills, itself its own unique form. Never flat, always up, or always down, the hills give the land a soothing sound, gently pulsating in its own rhythmic waves. It is here that I run.

Every step I take becomes part of the beautiful sound of these wonderful brown hills.
Every step I take adds my own personal sound.
Every step I take disturbs the simplistic peace of nature but adds to the peace of my own heart.
Every step I take is mine.

It's not very good writing, but I am finally getting back into it. It does a decent job, but a far from adequate job of conveying the beauty I see.

Back Home

Well, I am back home in Nashville. It is wonderful. The drive home was as it usually is. It was nice to catch up with Laura and see how she is doing. Wasn't quite the same as singing to fill the time! Everyone please say a prayer for Jiri Fischer. He collapsed last night during the 1st period of the wings-preds game. Click here to view the article. He is good condition now and it appears like he is going to be ok.

On the subject of hockey....Go Preds! Nashville wake up and support this team...12-3-3 in 4th place in the conference and playing damn good hockey. They deserve a sellout every night but hey I'll settle for 15K or so on average. Mind as well come out since the Titans are TERRIBLE, Vandy unfortunately missed out on a bowl as did UT :-) (I won't lie...I was thrilled). What else do you have to do? Tickets are only 10 bucks! Come on!

Quickie

Just a quick update since I am struggling to sleep. Today was a rough day football wise. I went 0-3. Panthers, bengals, and Titans all lost, although the Titans are rapidly falling off my list of teams I love. However, tomm is Preds-Dead Things game and I am pumped for that. Its gonna be tough, but I expect nothing less than outright victory.

Bring on the snow!

Abortion and Stem Cell Research

I am in a political mood...this could be bad.

Could someone please explain to me the double standard our government uses when it comes to stem-cell research and abortion? On the stem-cell side...it is a human being. On the abortion side, its not. Personal feelings aside, this is just flat out dumb. Because our president and his government are too blind to see the ignorance of his policy they are retarding some of the most important discoveries in human life.

Make up your mind Mr. Bush. Its either alive or its not. Its ironic that you choose to regard it as a life when there is possibly huge benefits involved but choose to regard it as unalive when it comes to the easy way out for someone's mistake.

The ignorance of these policies will not slow down stem-cell research in the world, just in the United States putting us at a disadvantage in the future.

Ok, I am off my soap box.

4 DAYS UNTIL NASHVILLE!!!!

I'm Nobody! Who are you?
Are you - Nobody - too?
Then there's a pair of us!
Don't tell! they'd advertise - you know!

How dreary - to be - Somebody!
How public - like a Frog -
To tell one's name - the livelong June -
To an admiring Bog!

Snowy Day

First damn cold day of the year. There will be a lot more damn cold days I have a feeling this year considering the fact that as I write these words its SNOWING. November 16. I'm pretty sure I have never seen snow (barring on top of a mountain) this early in my life and to be honest...I was perfectly content waiting until January every year. With that out of my system

LET IT SNOW LET IT SNOW LET IT SNOW!

A Rainy Day

Fall finally decided to roll around. Well not quite yet, but it will be tommorrow. I woke up this morning to a downpour and heavy flooding. Nothing quite beats Cincinnati/Ohio weather. Tommorrow, theres some snow on tap along with a major temperature drop....well see if it works out. I'm really hoping that it does.

Got the devil poetry paper off my back. Its all turned in so if i screwed it up...too late now right? Say a prayer that I did well on it. I feel that I should get at least a solid B maybe a B+ or low A, but I never know with those things. My Education test got moved back! That makes my life so much easier.

Anyways, no one really cares about all those details about my life, I just wanted to make a first post. Also, you should check out my other blog, Bloody Love. I am writing a short story chapter by chapter. Chapters 1 and 2 should be up later today. Please please leave comments and let me know what you think. I want to know what I am doing good and bad! Thanks.
